GrabX previews new solutions that it hopes will make its app more relevant to our daily lives

At its inaugural GrabX product showcase, Grab unveiled a lineup of new solutions coming over the next couple of months. Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-founder of Grab, said:

As Southeast Asians shift more and more to digital solutions for daily needs, we want to expand Grab’s relevance to their everyday lives. Our new suite of products is designed to achieve that, fostering growth and strengthening our connection with the communities we serve.

Grab teamed up with OpenAI and Anthropic to develop the new products and work on its  Large Language Model (LLM).

To that end, the new solutions include:

Grab For Family | Teens: Links a teen’s Grab account to a parent’s Grab for Family account. The teenager can book rides on their own or have rides booked by their parent. It’s designed with extra safety features built in to protect them, including:

  • Prioritised assignment to top-rated driver-partners with proven track records.
  • Ride PIN verification to make sure teens don’t get into the wrong car with the wrong
  • driver. When their ride arrives, they have to get a PIN from the driver and enter it into
  • their own app. The ride only starts if the PIN matches.
  • Always-on AudioProtect, which will soon be able to use GenAI to detect in real-time if there is anything dangerous happening in the car, so Grab can intervene immediately.
  • There is also trip monitoring that will allow parents to rest easy as the teens’ journey is tracked from beginning to end.

Grab for Family | Teens experience will launch across markets in May.

Grab uses AI to determine what is a large order. Photo: HWZ.

Better Large Order experience: When a GrabFood order is placed, Grab now uses a tailored LLM to determine if it’s a large order by estimating the weight and size of the items in the order. It will determine whether the order is too bulky or heavy for one delivery person to handle. Grab will try to find a 4-wheeler to deliver it to you. But if there isn’t one, the delivery will be split into two and assigned to two separate delivery partners.

This solution is now live across Southeast Asia.

Ordering for one can be hard. Photo: HWZ.

GrabFood for One: When ordering for one, it can be hard finding affordable options that are filling enough while meeting the minimum order value to avoid a small order charge. Adding on the delivery fee can make this meal not worth getting. So this is where “GrabFood for One” makes food delivery more accessible for solo dining by offering affordable meals with no minimum spend, at a fixed low delivery fee. To do this, Grab has worked with merchant partners to curate and design a list of meal options, which you can order through a quick checkout experience. GrabFood for One is now live and available in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Shared Saver: Somewhat similar to “GrabFood for One”, “Shared Saver” is for the times with you just wanted a drink or snack, but there was no way to make the minimum order amount. With Shared Saver, you can discover and join live orders near you, much like joining a

Group Order. Grab’s AI detects when there are multiple orders in the vicinity for the same merchant and can decide to start a Shared Saver order. There’s a countdown timer to tell you how soon you need to make a decision, and on your checkout screen, you’ll see how much you’ve saved on delivery by piggybacking on someone else’s order.

You can also be the one initiating a shared order, with Grab acting as a middleman to get others to join your delivery. When you do so, Grab says that the doorstep delivery fee will be cheaper than Saver delivery, with no small order fee. “Shared Saver” will be piloted in Singapore from April, with plans to roll out other pilot “Shared Saver” programmes in other countries by June.

Advance Booking (Airport Pickup): When you arrive back at Changi Airport, the last thing you need to be worried about is how you’re getting home. “Advance Booking (Airport Pickup)” offers a pickup service that can adjust driver schedules dynamically based on actual arrival times, ensuring that the driver is there when you arrive as long as you booked in advance.

This is available today from airports in Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, and Singapore.

Dine Out Discovery: Grab has been working on its app for several years, with Dine Out Discovery combining the best of Maps and Food to give you an easy way to discover dining options and deals around you. You can search and filter by cuisine, food preferences, what’s popular, ratings, price, and even how close things are. Tap on a restaurant to see menus, opening hours, photos, user reviews, and whether or not they’re offering a dine out deal. You can also make a table reservation at the restaurant if it’s available. Finally, use the map to navigate your way to the restaurant, or just tap to book a ride.

“Dine Out Discovery” will be available across all markets by May. “Reservations” will be launched in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand in May, with other markets to follow.

Grab Travel Pass: We’re all familiar with roaming data when we travel, well, Grab Travel Pass works in much the same way, but for transportation and food. Purchase a Travel Pass before you even leave to enjoy vouchers for airport rides, general transport, food delivery, and dining out.

As a parent, I’m most interested in seeing how “Grab For Family | Teens” will work with my two teenagers. Being able to track their movements is invaluable.

Grab has launched a Grab Early Access Programme for those wishing to trial the new addons, where feedback is to be provided for trialling the new solutions, so sign up now to familiarise yourself with how they work before they get rolled out.
