Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Viki
Reasons to watch: ENA’s new rom-com, My Troublesome Star, offers laughs, fantastical elements, and a mystery courtesy of Uhm Jung-hwa and Song Seung-heon.
We meet Uhm Jung-hwa at two points in her life. The first, is in her twenties when she was Korea’s hottest star, Im Se-ra. The second, and where the drama begins, is in her fifties when she’s just a regular ajumma. This isn’t a case of a star who slipped into obscurity though, she has zero memory of the past 25 years. As far as she’s concerned, she woke up in the hospital one day to find herself having aged decades and with an entirely new name.
As she tries to figure out where all the years have gone, she also decides to reclaim her spot as a star actress. Song Seung-heon steps into the story here as a former fanboy of Im Se-ra. He’s initially skeptical that “Im Se-ra” is actually who she claims to be. He decides to take a leap of faith and acts unofficially as her manager while he tries to figure out the mystery of his star’s identity and what happened to her 25 years ago.
I am very curious about the logistics of how and why there was a time jump in Im Se-ra’s mind, but I am ready to just suspend my disbelief and enjoy the story. Despite a few hints that something befell Im Se-ra when she was at the height of her fame, it looks like there will be generous doses of comedy and romance to balance out any darkness. I’m especially excited about the reunion between Uhm Jung-hwa and Song Seung-heon. I loved their chemistry in the film Wonderful Nightmare and I’m hoping they will recapture that chemistry in dramaland.
TL;DR: Hijinks and romance galore in this story of a top star trying to make a comeback 25 years after she disappeared.
