While the next version of iOS, macOS, and watchOS are tipped to be inspired by visionOS, Apple has another plan for iPadOS—to function “more like macOS”.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says Apple plans to push the iPad closer to a Mac-like experience by improving productivity, multitasking, and app window management.

Unsurprisingly, these three areas have been pain points for iPads for a long time. Apple tried to tackle multitasking with Stage Manager in iPadOS 16, but it was plagued with several quirks, such as missing the option to resize and reposition windows. You can read our take on Stage Manager our review of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (6th-gen).

Having reviewed several generations of iPads, it’s clear that it’s software that’s keeping the iPad from becoming a true laptop replacement. iPadOS is long overdue for a significant overhaul. We hope Apple can nail it this time and bring its tablets to the next level.
