O’PENing 2025 launches its short series with Cat Custody Battle, reuniting Kim Seul-gi (The Law Cafe) and Yoon Doo-joon (Never Give Up). The pair last worked together on screen in the MBC short fantasy Splash Splash Love ten years ago, and the marketers over at tvN have fully embraced the lore with a mock wedding invite: “Ten years ago, we met, and now we plan to walk towards the future together. Please cheer for our first steps.”

The newlyweds look absolutely blissful in their wedding reel, but that’s merely the prologue of their tale. Five years into their marriage, they have fallen out of love and are getting a divorce. The people around them, though, are a bit confused as to why they are going to court, and his friend asks incredulously, “Not child custody but cat custody?”

The only asset they need to divide is their adorable cat Nori, and neither side is willing to compromise. He has the financial means to take care of Nori and needles his wife to consider how many treats she can provide their cat. She, on the other hand, calls him a stranger in front of Nori and makes it clear that she has the upper hand in terms of affections.

However, as the teaser continues, the tone turns somber, and the show hints at the possibility that this might not be goodbye for our couple. He asks her why they are getting divorced as he carries his unconscious wife on his back, and she wonders if she went this far in hopes of gaining his heart. As we see the couple at their bitter end as well as their happy beginning, maybe there could be a future where Nori won’t have to choose between mom or dad after all.

Directed by PD Yoo Hak-chan (Top Star Yoo Baek) with scripts penned by Ji Soo-hee, the one-episode short Cat Custody Battle premieres Sunday, August 17.
