Reasons to watch: If you’ve ever had to help stop a loved one from getting taken in by a voice phishing scheme, you’ll probably identify with the heroine of the new Waave drama, No Mercy. Lee Joo-young headlines as a woman who once dreamed of becoming a police officer but decided to go into acting instead. That career choice has yet to pan out, but her career is the least of her concerns when we meet her.
Lee Joo-young is dealing with tragedy after tragedy. Her parents fall victim to a voice phishing scam, and in the aftermath, her father ends his own life and her mother goes missing. On top of that, the scammers seem to have gotten away scot-free with her family’s life savings. Not one to take things lying down, Lee Joo-young decides she’ll stop the gang and its leader Ji Seung-hyun by becoming one of them. Infiltrating a criminal gang is incredibly dangerous, but Lee Joo-young will have some help in the form of Gu Jun-hoe.
Gu Jun-hoe plays a detective who’s as determined as Lee Joo-young to bring down the scammers–even if it means risking his life. I know that in real life scammers often escape punishment, but I hope that in dramaland at least the hammer of justice will come slamming down on these evildoers.
