O’PENing 2025 is on the road for runaway doctors and cat custody

Preparations have begun on tvN CJ ENM for the next O’PENing season, continuing the tradition that started back in 2017 as tvN’s Drama Stage. The anthology series has since grown to become a collaboration, incorporating OCN and TVING in tandem with tvN under the umbrella of their parent company CJ, while still retaining its original spirit of providing a creative space where rookie writers and directors can shine.
Although we’re still waiting for more details to be officially announced, casting news has dropped for the short drama Cat Custody Battle (roughly translated), reuniting Kim Seul-gi (The Law Cafe) with Yoon Doo-joon (Never Give Up) after MBC’s short fantasy Splash Splash Love 10(!) years ago. This time, they’re living in the same century and even tie the knot. But they’re unfortunately heading towards divorce after 5 years of marriage and, as the title suggests, they’ll be fighting tooth-and-claw over who gets custody of their cat.
This year’s installment will reportedly include the following as well (titles roughly translated):
Title: That Day’s Ho-su
Format: Short drama
Need to know: The mystery tale follows a teacher’s search for the real truth following a sudden accident in the classroom, when said teacher had stepped out for a brief 10-minute break and one of the students had tragically died.
Title: My Daughter’s Friend’s Mom
Format: Short drama
Need to know: In an enemies-to-lover rom-com, a recently divorced dad runs into his former co-worker at his daughter’s school – who turns out to be our titular mom. But he has a big lesson to learn from his mistakes, having been inconsiderate to her single working mom circumstances in the past.

The 2025 season proper is expected to broadcast later this year. However, O’PENing is also releasing Road to General Surgeon (roughly translated), which has PD Kim Jae-hong (Yoo-na’s Street) at the helm and scripts penned by rookie Kim Se-hee – who went through the doctor residency process herself in real-life.
Coming to our screens this week on June 14, the 2-episode medical story has Jung Shin-hye (The Potato Lab) as our runaway first-year resident, prompting Kim Nam-hee (Bittersweet Hell) to task third-year Kim Gun-woo (The Glory) and second-year Lee Won-jung (Serendipity’s Embrace) with the difficult job of finding her and bringing her back.
