PC cases get crazier with Lian Li’s Lancool 207 Digital with a 6-inch LCD screen
When people think of a PC case, a certain image tends to come to mind: A boxy, usually black or white metal case with maybe a glass door on the side. Some manufacturers (like GameMax’s Blade Concept) break the mold through more offbeat designs, but most PC case innovations tend to be functional rather than in form.
But if you want a PC case that adds to that typical boxy look with a little bit of pizazz, Lian Li has got you covered with the ATX Lancool 207 Digital, a PC case that at first glance, looks ordinary (being based on the original Lancool 207), until you notice the 6-inch LCD display on the front.
It’s of a 720 x 1600 resolution at 60Hz, and has a brightness of 500 nits. That’s considerably bright (brighter than some monitors even) that seems a little bit overkill given that it’s mostly going to be inside, but the overall spec sheet reminds us of, say, an older midrange phone rather than a display on a PC case.
The screen is customisable through Lian Li’s L-Connect 3 software, and some of the advertised uses that Lian Li suggests include monitoring your CPU, GPU and fan performance through visual metrics. However, you can also use it to make the case look a bit more interesting; these include dynamic backgrounds, and pre-made displays that you can customise with personal videos or background images.
There’s also an Offline mode that ensures that the LCD stays on when the system is powered off, functioning like an always-on display. It can also serve as a secondary display via USB connection.
One of the big drawbacks, though, is not in the display itself but in the fact that this is likely oriented to those who have their PCs on their desk. Hard to imagine that the hardware monitoring or secondary display capabilities would be useful if you have to crane your head to the floor, but perhaps it would make for nice set design if you match it to the RGB LEDs in your case.
On the more practical side, the Lancool 207 Digital features a front-mounted PSU and a recessed motherboard design, and also comes with two pre-installed 140mm PWM fans at the front and another two 120mm PWM fans at the bottom, with additional support for a 360mm radiator at the top.
Pricing and availability
The Lian Li Lancool 207 Digital will cost US$109.99, though there’s no word on availability on Lian Li’s official local sellers.
