Reasons to watch: How far would you go if you could save your family from financial ruin? KBS’s latest drama, Walking on Thin Ice posits that question as we follow Lee Young-ae as she descends into a life of crime.
Lee Young-ae headlines the show as a woman who has a happy home life. She’s married to Bae Soo-bin and has a daughter who shows a knack for art and is soon to graduate high school. When her husband falls ill, she realizes that their life was built on sand and that they have huge debts thanks to her husband getting a loan against their home. With her husband unable to work–or repay any of his debts–the walls start to close in on their family and debtors come calling.
Just as her entire life is unraveling, Lee Young-ae finds a big bag stuffed full of what she learns is meth (a.k.a. ice). Good intentions to report her find go out the window when she realizes the street value of the drugs could clear out the family’s debt, so she decides to find a way to sell the drugs instead. She knows she can’t do it alone, so she finds a partner online who turns out to be her daughter’s art teacher, Kim Young-kwang. As you might expect from a man who’s moonlighting as a drug dealer while teaching kids, he’s not the most scrupulous or reliable business partner. None of this matters to Lee Young-ae though, as long as she can earn enough money to get out of debt.
As this unlikely duo makes headway into the drug dealing scene, they have to evade both the criminals who originally owned the drugs and the police. Detective Park Yong-woo is hot on their tails, and only time will tell if our dealer duo will be able to escape the law and other criminals with their lives intact.
